Kilimanjaro Climbing Machame Route

Tour Overview

The Machame route is also known as a “Whiskey Route” and is better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira Peak, to the misty revelations of Kibo Peak at the Great Barranco Wall. Machame route offers the hikers a stunning daily “slideshow”until you make it to the Summit 5,895 mt.

Day 1: Depart to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

Today is departure from the selected airport to Tanzania. There will be layover along the way

Day 2: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). We will proceed with visas and make our way out to the beautiful Tanzanian atmosphere , where we meet our local The Bugs Adventures Travel representative, and transfer to a hotel in Moshi (45 mins) Dinner and breakfast served at the Hotel.

Day 3: Machame Gate 1,490 mt - Machame Camp 2980 MT

After breakfast, our adventure to the roof of Africa will begin. A journey of 2 hours drive will be maximum to reach the Machame Gate. Hiking begins soon after completing the necessary registrations at the gate.
At the beginning of the climb, Machame Gate 1490 m, the average temperature is around 25°to 30°C. From there, the temperature decreases as you move through zones. At the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895mt), the night temperatures can range from -18° to -26°C. Due to the great height of Mount Kilimanjaro, it creates its own weather pattern which is virtually impossible to predict. Therefore, we advise you to always be prepared for a variety of conditions.
We depart the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp. Dinner & Overnight at Machame Camp.

Day 4: Machame Camp 2,980 mt - Shira Hut 3,840 Mt

Travel / Activity

After breakfast we leave the glades of the rainforest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the valley along a steep rocky ridge. The route now turns west onto a river gorge until we arrive at the Shira campsite around mid-afternoon. At the Camp, we will have lunch and relax before the evening.
You can enjoy great views of Kibo peak from New Shira Camp at sunset. Later in the evening dinner will be served before an Overnight.

Day 6: Barranco Camp 3,950 mt - Karanga Camp 3,950 mt

Today’s hike is a short one and ideally for acclimatization. After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall.
At the top of the Wall, you will have a view of Heim Glacier and will be above the clouds. The trail winds up and down in the Karanga Valley up to the junction which connects with Mweka Trail.Dinner & Overnight at Karanga Camp.

Day 7: Karanga Camp 3,963 mt - Barafu Camp 4,640 mt

We continue up to Barafu Camp. You have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we camp, rest, enjoy dinner while sharing a good story with the rest of the group, and prepare for the summit day.

Day 8: Barafu Camp 4,640 mt - Uhuru Peak (Summit 5,895 mt) - Mweka Camp 3,100 mt

Travel / Activity

After a cup of hot tea and a light snack at midnight, the climb begins around midnight when the lava ash is still frozen,making it easier to walk. We continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a north-westerly direction and ascend through a heavy screen towards Stella Point on the crater rim.
At Stella Point, we will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise . Those wishing to start earlier may view the sunrise from the summit.
From Stella Point, we may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak we have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!
From the summit we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch.Enjoy our last evening on the mountain at Mweka Camp.

Day 9: Mweka Camp 3,100 mt – Mweka Gate 1,980 mt

Travel / Activity

After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka gate. Once we arrive at the gate, you will receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).
Our vehicle will be waiting for us at Mweka gate to drive us back to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 10 - Day 13

Travel / Activity

After breakfast you will depart from Dual Mountain lodge, transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar. Meet with our representative in Zanzibar before taking a shuttle to Nungwi . The shimmering stretches of white sand and blue -green water of the Indian Ocean, makes Zanzibar the best African coast holiday destination. This spice island of Zanzibar offers exciting stories, lovely people ,great beach experiences and best marine activities such as snorkeling, diving, surf kites and sunset cruise. It’s also known as the “cradle of Swahili culture.

Day 14: Fly back to Home

Enjoy stone town after breakfast, lunch then prepare to transfer to Zanzibar airport for your flight.
