Mount Meru

Mt. Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,562 m (14,967 ft)and the fifth highest in Africa. The volcanic mountain is located within Arusha National Park and this prime location gives trekkers the opportunity to spot the various wildlife that inhabit the area.

Reaching the Summit

The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge, which provides stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several thousand feet below in the crater. Weather permitting, Kilimanjaro can be seen to the east. There are two huts available to climbers on the mountain.

What you should know.

Climbing Mount Meru requires more technical climbing skills than the routes on Kilimanjaro. What Mount Meru lacks in is the heights. Also there’s only 1 route to climb Mount Meru, therefore there’s need to figure out which route suits you best.

Mount Meru’s most remarkable features is its distinct crater and caldera. The volcanic cone is heavily eroded by the past eruptions, creating a dramatic caldera of 3.5 kilometers in diameter. Within the caldera lies a small active volcanic cone, adding unique geological structure to the mountain.

Dry Season

This season is less Rain but occasional showers are possible. Mount Meru experiences a tropical climate. The weather is generally warm and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 15°C (59°F) at the base to 0°C (32°F) at the summit.

Rainy Season

Heavy rainfall can be expected during these months. Winds can be strong, especially at higher altitudes. Strong windy sometimes can make temperatures feel colder than its actually are.
